What is RSS?
RSS (which stands for Really Simple Syndication) allows you to use a news reader or feed aggregator to gather up various news sources found throughout the web. The City of Salinas has made a number of feeds available in RSS 2.0 format. Once you subscribe to a feed, you will always have the latest information as your RSS reader automatically retrieves the RSS feeds.
RSS feeds can be added through E-Mail applications such as Microsoft Outlook 2007
and Yahoo! Mail
. If you are interested in trying out a news reader, please explore the applications below:
Readers
- Bloglines (Web-based, platform-independent)
- Google Reader (Web-based, platform-independent)
- FeedDemon (Windows)
- FeedReader (Windows)
- NetNewsWire (Mac)
- NewsFire (Mac)
If your news reader doesn't automatically recognize these feeds, you may need to manually add them to your news reader by copying and pasting the URL link to each RSS feed. However, if you're still not sure what all of this is about, watch
the video below, titled “RSS in Plain English”
which was created by Common Craft Productions
